Russia’s Trade with Brazil

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Brazil was $947,948,873, down 19.11% ($223,959,353) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $444,208,652, down 22.48% ($128,816,302) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $503,740,221, down 15.89% ($95,143,051) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade deficit with Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 was $59,531,569, a 130.22% increase ($33,673,251) over the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Brazil was Russia’s 26th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 32nd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.7770% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.7320% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Brazil was Russia’s 30th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 38th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.6353% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.5687% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Brazil was Russia’s 24th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 21st in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.9671% of Russia’s total imports (down from 1.0095% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Brazil

The major share of Russian exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 80.85% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (78.65% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 13.68% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (15.26% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.10% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (1.98% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.83% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (3.01% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $9,302,216;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $1,880,521.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $79,525,403;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $21,515,742;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $9,243,615;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $6,096,975;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $5,636,077;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $5,162,973;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $2,640,396;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $2,110,498;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $1,820,950;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $1,495,996;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $1,333,915.

Russia’s Imports from Brazil

The major share of Russian imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 73.48% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (76.68% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 8.07% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (6.49% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.48% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (8.29% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.09% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (5.31% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.13% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (0.34% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $7,120,250;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $6,039,290;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $3,888,279;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $2,608,306;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $2,358,960;

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $7,745,605;
  • Footwear, gaiters and the like; parts of such articles (HS code 64) - a decrease of $2,084,669.
