Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $278,782,975, down 9.49% ($29,230,267) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $96,381,559, up 64.80% ($37,898,931) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $182,401,416, down 26.90% ($67,129,198) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 was $86,019,857, a 54.97% decrease ($105,028,129) over the 2nd quarter of 2019.

South Africa was Russia’s 63rd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2285% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1924% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 65th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 83rd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1378% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0580% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 45th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 42nd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.3502% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.4206% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 44.98% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (9.36% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.82% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (21.03% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.70% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (8.77% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 7.11% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (11.41% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.01% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (43.08% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.18% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (5.64% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $37,933,598;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $17,460,325;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $7,338,607;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $2,007,786.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $20,247,847;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $1,532,361;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $1,532,106;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,159,321;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $663,263;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $427,127.
