Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with the US was $5,746,469,349, down 20.46% ($1,477,827,060) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $2,133,867,334, down 41.13% ($1,490,564,078) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $3,612,602,015, up 0.35% ($12,737,018) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a surplus of $24,566,415 in the 2nd quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $1,478,734,681 in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

The US was Russia’s 6th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 5th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 4.7100% of Russia’s total trade (up from 4.5127% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 7th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 3.0519% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.5970% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 6.9355% of Russia’s total imports (up from 6.0681% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 44.17% of Russia’s total exports to the US (54.24% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 17.67% of Russia’s total exports to the US (8.26% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.83% of Russia’s total exports to the US (12.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.62% of Russia’s total exports to the US (17.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.66% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.37% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.65% of Russia’s total exports to the US (4.14% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.15% of Russia’s total exports to the US (0.50% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.33% of Russia’s total imports from the US (2.96% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
