Russia’s Trade with Turkmenistan

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Turkmenistan totaled $364,674,403, up 187.12% ($237,661,797) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Turkmenistan in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $146,813,903, up 70.05% ($60,480,342) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Turkmenistan in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $217,860,500, up 435.56% ($177,181,455) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Turkmenistan went from a surplus of $45,654,516 in the 2nd quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $71,046,597 in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 54th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 79th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2989% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0793% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 59th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 75th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2100% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0857% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Turkmenistan was Russia’s 39th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 75th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.4183% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0686% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Turkmenistan

The major share of Russian exports to Turkmenistan in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.56% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (19.26% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 22.41% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (12.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 19.70% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (18.98% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 19.24% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (33.82% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.93% of Russia’s total exports to Turkmenistan (8.85% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);

  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $443,403.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Turkmenistan in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $8,496,602;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $3,453,720;
  • Live animals (HS code 01) - a decrease of $2,300,787;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $1,408,278;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $738,191;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $549,031;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $492,975.
