Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Ukraine was $1,701,256,837, down 54.13% ($2,007,381,305) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $872,257,463, down 64.02% ($1,552,301,519) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $828,999,374, down 35.44% ($455,079,786) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 was $43,258,089, a 96.21% decrease ($1,097,221,733) over the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Ukraine was Russia’s 17th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 12th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 1.3944% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.3166% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Ukraine was Russia’s 18th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 14th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 1.2475% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.4062% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 10th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 1.5915% of Russia’s total imports (down from 2.1645% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 28.32% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (16.44% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 20.98% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.14% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 20.70% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (11.13% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.89% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.38% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 5.82% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (51.42% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.02% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (2.91% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $3,253,207;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $2,801,893;
  • Preparations of meat, of fish or of crustaceans, molluscs or other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 16) - an increase of $2,705,668.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
