Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 3rd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $54,124,314, up 72.24% ($22,700,307) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 totaled $53,579,017, up 76.01% ($23,138,418) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $545,297, down 44.55% ($438,111) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was $53,033,720, a 80.04% increase ($23,576,529) over the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 97th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 114th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0396% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0189% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 77th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 100th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0681% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0295% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 132nd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0009% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0016% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 15.88% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (16.85% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.49% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (0.61% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.18% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (4.77% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.08% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (4.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $2,075,619;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - an increase of $1,257,807;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $1,049,583;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $634,523;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $603,480;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - an increase of $250,798;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $181,065.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $645,732;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $532,906;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $165,000.

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 94.54% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (91.49% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 0.73% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (4.03% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $92,546.
