Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 4th quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Japan was $4,141,208,722, down 15.69% ($770,887,698) from the 4th quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2020 were $2,022,662,812, down 25.19% ($681,202,992) from the 4th quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 4th quarter of 2020 were $2,118,545,910, down 4.06% ($89,684,706) from the 4th quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Japan went from a surplus of $495,635,188 in the 4th quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $95,883,098 in the 4th quarter of 2020.

Japan was Russia’s 11th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2020 (up from 12th in the 4th quarter of 2019), accounting for 2.5554% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.7309% in the 4th quarter of 2019).

Japan was Russia’s 12th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2020 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2019), accounting for 2.1421% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.4176% in the 4th quarter of 2019).

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2020 (down from 7th in the 4th quarter of 2019), accounting for 3.1325% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.2461% in the 4th quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2020 (and in the 4th quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 58.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (72.78% in the 4th quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 15.77% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (9.91% in the 4th quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.35% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.23% in the 4th quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 6.28% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.82% in the 4th quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.29% in the 4th quarter of 2019);

  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $50,939,874;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $10,167,586.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2020 over the 4th quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $798,877,969;
