Russia’s Trade with Malaysia

In the 1st quarter of 2021, Russia’s trade with Malaysia was $609,781,341, down 21.70% ($168,985,907) from the 1st quarter of 2020.

Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2021 were $237,510,398, down 40.65% ($162,687,346) from the 1st quarter of 2020.

Russia’s imports from Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2021 were $372,270,943, down 1.66% ($6,298,561) from the 1st quarter of 2020.

Russia’s trade balance with Malaysia went from a surplus of $21,628,240 in the 1st quarter of 2020, to a deficit of $134,760,545 in the 1st quarter of 2021.

Malaysia was Russia’s 41st largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2021 (down from 35th in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.3945% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.5479% in the 1st quarter of 2020).

Malaysia was Russia’s 51st largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2021 (down from 40th in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.2574% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.4498% in the 1st quarter of 2020).

Malaysia was Russia’s 32nd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2021 (down from 30th in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.5976% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.7122% in the 1st quarter of 2020).

Russia’s Exports to Malaysia

The major share of Russian exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2021 (and in the 1st quarter of 2020) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 78.75% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (82.05% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 11.12% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (3.16% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.50% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (1.35% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.43% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (0.70% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.71% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (1.21% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.61% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (2.37% in the 1st quarter of 2020).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2021 over the 1st quarter of 2020 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2,996,160;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $2,488,618;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $2,250,434;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $2,049,556;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $934,758.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2021 over the 1st quarter of 2020 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $140,453,525;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $5,720,102;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $1,689,741;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,409,921;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $1,197,783.

Russia’s Imports from Malaysia

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 30.98% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (21.35% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 11.62% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (11.80% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.87% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (3.18% in the 1st quarter of 2020).
