Russia’s Trade with Iran

In 2012, Russia’s trade with Iran was $2,328,511,522, down 38.03% ($1,428,957,778) from 2011.

Russia’s exports to Iran in 2012 were $1,900,386,610, down 44.21% ($1,505,703,138) from 2011.

Russia’s imports from Iran in 2012 totaled $428,124,912, up 21.84% ($76,745,360) from 2011.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in 2012 was $1,472,261,698, a 51.80% decrease ($1,582,448,498) over 2011.

Iran was Russia’s 45th largest trading partner in 2012 (down from 35th in 2011), accounting for 0.2765% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.4568% in 2011).

Iran was Russia’s 38th largest export market in 2012 (down from 28th in 2011), accounting for 0.3622% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.6592% in 2011).

Iran was Russia’s 57th largest supplier in 2012 (up from 61st in 2011), accounting for 0.1349% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1149% in 2011).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 46.09% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (75.40% in 2011);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 28.20% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (2.15% in 2011);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 13.25% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (9.19% in 2011);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.15% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (4.16% in 2011);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 4.28% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.11% in 2011);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.54% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (2.12% in 2011);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 0.00% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.65% in 2011).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $419,540,387;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $38,111,735;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $28,708,032;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - an increase of $8,645,347;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $7,031,457.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2012 over 2011 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,681,206,112;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $124,486,190;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $52,672,210;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $52,505,860;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $30,460,421;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $27,171,645;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $22,290,523;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $12,717,225;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $7,013,033;

The major share of Russian imports from Iran in 2012 (and in 2011) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.81% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (8.34% in 2011);

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.08% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (4.86% in 2011);
