Russia’s Trade with Syria

In 2014, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $594,292,945, up 57.87% ($217,859,960) from 2013.

Russia’s exports to Syria in 2014 totaled $587,159,418, up 63.00% ($226,930,237) from 2013.

Russia’s imports from Syria in 2014 were $7,133,527, down 55.98% ($9,070,277) from 2013.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in 2014 was $580,025,891, a 68.60% increase ($236,000,514) over 2013.

Syria was Russia’s 81st largest trading partner in 2014 (up from 89th in 2013), accounting for 0.0759% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0447% in 2013).

Syria was Russia’s 68th largest export market in 2014 (up from 75th in 2013), accounting for 0.1182% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0683% in 2013).

Syria was Russia’s 123rd largest supplier in 2014 (down from 112th in 2013), accounting for 0.0025% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0051% in 2013).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 10.92% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (7.05% in 2013);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.18% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (5.36% in 2013);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.49% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.11% in 2013);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.38% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (15.52% in 2013);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 5.20% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (5.54% in 2013);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.02% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.25% in 2013).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $38,212,278;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $22,557,405;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - an increase of $18,338,674;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $15,797,094;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $11,781,032;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $8,101,237;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $6,026,034;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $4,970,524;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $4,436,716;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $43,619,632;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $7,009,688;
  • Preparations of meat, of fish or of crustaceans, molluscs or other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 16) - a decrease of $6,104,215;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,951,160.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 74.18% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (58.85% in 2013);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 18.30% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (32.69% in 2013);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.71% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (1.46% in 2013);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.46% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (1.38% in 2013).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $133,737;
  • Ceramic products (HS code 69) - an increase of $37,590;
