Russia's Trade with Syria

In the 1st quarter of 2016, Russia's trade with Syria was $77,620,607, down 42.70% ($57,846,363) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 were $74,435,724, down 44.51% ($59,699,472) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 totaled $3,184,883, up 139.15% ($1,853,109) from the 1st quarter of 2015.

Russia's trade surplus with Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 was $71,250,841, a 46.35% decrease ($61,552,581) over the 1st quarter of 2015.

Syria was Russia's 80th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 75th in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0798% of Russia's total trade (down from 0.1024% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia's 69th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down from 61st in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1213% of Russia's total exports (down from 0.1486% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia's 105th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2016 (up from 122nd in the 1st quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0089% of Russia's total imports (up from 0.0032% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

Russia's Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 21.96% of Russia's total exports to Syria (3.06% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.58% of Russia's total exports to Syria (7.07% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.94% of Russia's total exports to Syria (22.16% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.39% of Russia's total exports to Syria (20.43% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia's exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $6,361,032;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $3,417,610;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $2,452,349.

The largest declines in Russia's exports to Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $24,200,910;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $22,597,753;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $5,474,636;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $4,616,058;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $1,325,876;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $1,200,977;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $1,045,556;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $841,428;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $280,047.

Russia's Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 (and in the 1st quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 98.76% of Russia's total imports from Syria (62.70% in the 1st quarter of 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.02% of Russia's total imports from Syria (34.88% in the 1st quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia's imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $2,188,474;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $128,208.

The largest declines in Russia's imports from Syria in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the 1st quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Footwear, gaiters and the like; parts of such articles (HS code 64) - a decrease of $299,894;
  • Knitted or crocheted fabrics (HS code 60) - a decrease of $108,457;
  • Man-made filaments (HS code 54) - a decrease of $40,309;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - a decrease of $9,800.
