Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 2nd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Australia was $157,353,224, down 8.41% ($14,439,157) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $15,388,583, down 32.61% ($7,446,000) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $141,964,641, down 4.69% ($6,993,157) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 was $126,576,058, a 0.36% increase ($452,843) over the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Australia was Russia’s 71st largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (up from 73rd in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1446% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1260% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Australia was Russia’s 99th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (up from 100th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0232% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0249% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Australia was Russia’s 51st largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (down from 48th in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.3349% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.3326% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 42.90% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (23.42% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 25.99% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (27.80% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 10.70% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (6.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.18% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (29.82% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.14% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (7.35% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 4.92% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (2.10% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.88% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (0.49% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,281,491;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $615,787;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $318,810;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $165,962;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $152,929;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $152,595;
  • Other made up textile articles; sets; worn clothing and worn textile articles; rags (HS code 63) - an increase of $127,234;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $61,983;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - an increase of $47,741.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $5,859,277;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $4,427,696;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $855,222;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $586,828;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - a decrease of $258,712;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $92,164;
