Russia’s Trade with Canada

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Canada was $317,197,653, down 29.81% ($134,703,441) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $95,564,478, down 23.59% ($29,503,235) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $221,633,175, down 32.19% ($105,200,206) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade deficit with Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $126,068,697, a 37.52% decrease ($75,696,971) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Canada was Russia’s 56th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 47th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.2328% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.3456% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Canada was Russia’s 72nd largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 62nd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1140% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1517% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Canada was Russia’s 38th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 32nd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.4227% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.6762% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Canada

The major share of Russian exports to Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 33.50% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (25.27% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 28.16% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (34.65% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 10.35% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (15.32% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.13% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (3.23% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.74% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.13% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.66% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.63% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $1,556,439;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $1,000,006;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $821,577;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $797,749;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $695,811;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $694,080;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $519,626.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Canada in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $18,018,299;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $9,550,288;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $3,678,894;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $450,750;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $392,740.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 17.57% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (11.20% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 12.38% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (4.60% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.73% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (6.10% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
