Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia totaled $174,106,500, up 913.18% ($156,922,292) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $167,389,987, up 1,770.10% ($158,439,143) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $6,716,513, down 18.42% ($1,516,851) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $160,673,474, a 22,294.14% increase ($159,955,994) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 70th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 122nd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1278% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0131% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 62nd largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 124th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.1997% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0109% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 99th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 100th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0128% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0170% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.72% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (1.44% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.84% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (1.55% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.11% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (4.95% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 0.05% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (90.53% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $9,506,000;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $2,283,271;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $2,097,606.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $8,075,381.

Russia’s Imports from Ethiopia

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 97.89% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (99.83% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.68% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (0.17% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - an increase of $288,488;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $60,566;

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $1,756,566;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $168,259;
  • Lac; gums, resins and other vegetable saps and extracts (HS code 13) - a decrease of $35,772.
