Russia’s Trade with Finland

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Finland totaled $2,776,833,718, up 15.16% ($365,581,728) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $2,047,730,409, up 21.22% ($358,474,382) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $729,103,309, up 0.98% ($7,107,346) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $1,318,627,100, a 36.33% increase ($351,367,036) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Finland was Russia’s 15th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 14th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 2.0378% of Russia’s total trade (up from 1.8439% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Finland was Russia’s 12th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 13th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 2.4425% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.0493% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Finland was Russia’s 17th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 1.3906% of Russia’s total imports (down from 1.4937% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Finland

The major share of Russian exports to Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 60.37% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (74.17% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 20.02% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (2.84% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.03% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (12.52% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.85% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (7.08% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.41% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (1.76% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 0.70% of Russia’s total exports to Finland (1.07% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $197,644,885;
  • Nickel and articles thereof (HS code 75) - an increase of $168,179,527;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $19,988,653;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $9,469,083;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $7,351,654;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $6,429,318.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $17,405,324;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $8,523,308;
  • Miscellaneous articles of base metal (HS code 83) - a decrease of $7,678,544;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $7,363,951.

Russia’s Imports from Finland

The major share of Russian imports from Finland in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 40.77% of Russia’s total imports from Finland (43.80% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 21.52% of Russia’s total imports from Finland (21.04% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 17.35% of Russia’s total imports from Finland (16.72% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.97% of Russia’s total imports from Finland (5.17% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
