Russia’s Trade with Syria

In 2016, Russia’s trade with Syria was $193,274,966, down 38.15% ($119,235,163) from 2015.

Russia’s exports to Syria in 2016 were $182,254,339, down 40.69% ($125,020,316) from 2015.

Russia’s imports from Syria in 2016 totaled $11,020,627, up 110.50% ($5,785,153) from 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in 2016 was $171,233,712, a 43.31% decrease ($130,805,469) over 2015.

Syria was Russia’s 99th largest trading partner in 2016 (down from 85th in 2015), accounting for 0.0413% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0594% in 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 87th largest export market in 2016 (down from 71st in 2015), accounting for 0.0638% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0894% in 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 113th largest supplier in 2016 (up from 125th in 2015), accounting for 0.0060% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0029% in 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in 2016 (and in 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 25.76% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (13.73% in 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 7.08% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (17.50% in 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.68% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (10.85% in 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.13% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (9.32% in 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2016 over 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $3,765,114;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $3,124,603;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $1,254,188;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $960,246;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $681,757.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in 2016 over 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $32,876,730;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $21,306,804;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $20,595,156;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $7,298,661;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $2,106,635;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $2,072,387;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,440,384;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,095,653;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $798,148;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $695,993;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $672,939.

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 97.93% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (82.35% in 2015);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.32% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (14.00% in 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (1.36% in 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in 2016 over 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $4,170,798;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $2,229,142;
