Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $66,598,478, up 11.81% ($7,035,158) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $66,116,218, up 14.76% ($8,502,642) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $482,260, down 75.27% ($1,467,484) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $65,633,958, a 17.91% increase ($9,970,126) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 94th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 87th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0477% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0547% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 81st largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 74th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0787% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0867% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 136th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 118th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0009% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0046% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 62.63% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (66.17% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 17.63% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.21% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 12.95% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (13.55% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.14% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.20% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.95% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.77% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.31% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.09% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $3,287,955;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $2,521,852;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $937,054;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $718,128;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $370,229;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $358,172.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $302,056.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.42% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (99.96% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $43,215;
  • Carpets and other textile floor coverings (HS code 57) - an increase of $2,341.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $1,512,650.
