Russia’s Trade with Germany

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Germany totaled $12,073,079,266, up 15.72% ($1,640,332,841) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Germany in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $5,533,442,837, up 3.21% ($172,299,532) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Germany in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $6,539,636,429, up 28.95% ($1,468,033,309) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade balance with Germany went from a surplus of $289,540,185 in the 3rd quarter of 2016, to a deficit of $1,006,193,592 in the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Germany was Russia’s 2nd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 8.2587% of Russia’s total trade (down from 8.5568% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Germany was Russia’s 3rd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 6.4825% of Russia’s total exports (down from 7.4517% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Germany was Russia’s 2nd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 10.7512% of Russia’s total imports (up from 10.1477% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Germany

The major share of Russian exports to Germany in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 84.89% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (83.08% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.42% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (5.23% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.32% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (3.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.94% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (3.39% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.84% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (1.72% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 1.02% of Russia’s total exports to Germany (1.61% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Germany in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $212,137,457;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $27,844,005;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $26,840,718.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Germany in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - a decrease of $57,587,719;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $37,594,889;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $29,895,857.
