Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $208,475,698, up 54.45% ($73,493,733) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $64,168,556, up 339.82% ($49,578,746) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $144,307,142, up 19.86% ($23,914,987) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $80,138,586, a 24.26% decrease ($25,663,759) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Australia was Russia’s 71st largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 78th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1247% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0991% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Australia was Russia’s 77th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 108th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0624% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0174% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Australia was Russia’s 55th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 52nd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2245% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.2296% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 14.80% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (49.19% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.19% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (16.60% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.12% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (12.42% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.32% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (9.29% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.82% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (5.17% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.26% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (5.11% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,958,847;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $489,582;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $444,981;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $415,610;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $370,616;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $359,416;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $308,608;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $223,719.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $519,153;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $235,967;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $226,341.
