Russia’s Trade with South Ossetia

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with South Ossetia totaled $25,020,643, up 33.28% ($6,247,755) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $23,230,934, up 27.69% ($5,038,211) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $1,789,709, up 208.48% ($1,209,544) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $21,441,225, a 21.74% increase ($3,828,667) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

South Ossetia was Russia’s 120th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 119th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0150% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0138% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 106th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 103rd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0226% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0217% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

South Ossetia was Russia’s 121st largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 132nd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0028% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0011% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to South Ossetia

The major share of Russian exports to South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 33.67% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (32.41% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 22.41% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (21.22% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.37% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (7.91% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 10.95% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (16.00% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 5.67% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (2.71% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.18% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (6.18% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.81% of Russia’s total exports to South Ossetia (1.15% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1,355,694;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $1,037,522;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $648,112;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - an increase of $498,262;
  • Toys, games and sports requisites; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 95) - an increase of $486,021;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $302,906;
  • Other made up textile articles; sets; worn clothing and worn textile articles; rags (HS code 63) - an increase of $269,803;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $261,865;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $259,418;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $177,464;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $126,276;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $123,896;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $107,279;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $92,038.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Ossetia in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - a decrease of $858,950;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $479,774;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $451,307;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $409,426;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $341,189;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $310,216;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $95,581.
