Russia’s Trade with Nigeria

In 2017, Russia’s trade with Nigeria totaled $430,933,589, up 9.25% ($36,473,196) from 2016.

Russia’s exports to Nigeria in 2017 totaled $385,944,940, up 1.60% ($6,071,074) from 2016.

Russia’s imports from Nigeria in 2017 totaled $44,988,649, up 208.43% ($30,402,122) from 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Nigeria in 2017 was $340,956,291, a 6.66% decrease ($24,331,048) over 2016.

Nigeria was Russia’s 82nd largest trading partner in 2017 (down from 80th in 2016), accounting for 0.0738% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0843% in 2016).

Nigeria was Russia’s 71st largest export market in 2017 (down from 68th in 2016), accounting for 0.1081% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1331% in 2016).

Nigeria was Russia’s 95th largest supplier in 2017 (up from 109th in 2016), accounting for 0.0198% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0080% in 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Nigeria

The major share of Russian exports to Nigeria in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 67.54% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (67.01% in 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 18.76% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (8.29% in 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.25% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (4.05% in 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.13% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (2.06% in 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.90% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (1.15% in 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.19% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (1.96% in 2016).

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $40,863,743;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $11,266,513;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $9,442,091;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $3,853,250;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $3,245,437;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $1,394,600;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $1,267,862.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $6,921,320;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - a decrease of $4,050,740;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $2,100,208;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $1,423,188.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.67% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (7.53% in 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (1.97% in 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $18,438,279;
