Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $4,482,812,453, up 13.73% ($541,279,563) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $2,585,499,770, up 13.49% ($307,358,412) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $1,897,312,683, up 14.06% ($233,921,151) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $688,187,087, a 11.95% increase ($73,437,261) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.8438% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.0661% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Japan was Russia’s 13th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 11th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.5096% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.7337% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 6th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.4743% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.6788% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 75.66% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (74.84% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 10.52% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (13.44% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.83% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.82% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 4.53% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.81% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.49% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (0.10% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.10% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.40% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $242,258,239;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $60,414,092;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $23,594,572;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $10,795,285;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $7,868,273.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $60,685,664.

Russia’s Imports from Japan

The major share of Russian imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 78.73% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (78.87% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.13% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (12.45% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.65% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (2.89% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
