Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with South Africa totaled $294,258,660, up 34.72% ($75,843,047) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $86,517,434, up 75.27% ($37,155,168) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $207,741,226, up 22.89% ($38,687,879) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $121,223,792, a 1.28% increase ($1,532,711) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

South Africa was Russia’s 67th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 65th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1722% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1563% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

South Africa was Russia’s 76th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 86th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0785% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0588% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

South Africa was Russia’s 44th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 49th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.3422% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.3030% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 70.89% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (41.33% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 13.25% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (9.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.33% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (11.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
