Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $178,252,667, up 17.88% ($27,033,826) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $30,556,611, up 55.17% ($10,864,039) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $147,696,056, up 12.29% ($16,169,787) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $117,139,445, a 4.74% increase ($5,305,748) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Australia was Russia’s 77th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 72nd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.1036% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1034% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Australia was Russia’s 100th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 103rd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0272% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0231% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Australia was Russia’s 48th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 54th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.2467% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.2162% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 39.78% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (50.12% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 29.44% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (11.20% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 11.77% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (13.93% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 7.50% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (7.39% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.97% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (8.90% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.87% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (3.93% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $3,901,783;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2,701,509;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $2,530,330;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $942,283;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $853,331;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $336,394;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $307,052;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $185,057;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $146,332;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $120,123;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $114,557.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - a decrease of $304,435;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $267,490;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $253,023;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $248,706;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - a decrease of $195,431;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $103,349.
