Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $34,980,035, down 23.91% ($10,994,087) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $34,413,574, down 23.00% ($10,278,973) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $566,461, down 55.80% ($715,114) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $33,847,113, a 22.03% decrease ($9,563,859) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 107th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 102nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0239% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0377% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 92nd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 83rd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0403% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0621% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 134th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 127th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0009% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0026% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 22.85% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 20.05% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (16.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.56% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.38% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.69% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (0.81% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.07% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (11.88% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $633,523;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $518,640;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $370,078;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $349,335;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $116,292.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $7,773,231;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $4,202,095;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $561,190;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $283,576.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 77.46% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (99.74% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 15.74% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.03% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $78,101;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $10,751.
