Russia’s Trade with China

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with China totaled $23,196,604,286, up 27.54% ($5,009,507,701) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $8,686,531,682, up 36.17% ($2,307,162,832) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $14,510,072,604, up 22.89% ($2,702,344,869) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $5,823,540,922, a 7.28% increase ($395,182,037) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

China was Russia’s largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 15.8678% of Russia’s total trade (up from 14.9169% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

China was Russia’s largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 2nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 10.1764% of Russia’s total exports (up from 8.8670% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

China was Russia’s largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 23.8545% of Russia’s total imports (up from 23.6260% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to China

The major share of Russian exports to China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 71.61% of Russia’s total exports to China (68.00% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 11.86% of Russia’s total exports to China (13.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 5.31% of Russia’s total exports to China (6.97% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.06% of Russia’s total exports to China (6.48% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.22% of Russia’s total exports to China (4.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.11% of Russia’s total exports to China (0.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1,789,503,155;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $184,097,028;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - an increase of $149,244,636;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $109,229,135;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $81,432,467;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $47,842,212.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to China in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $67,439,077;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $34,450,515;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $31,255,247.
