Russia’s Trade with Cuba

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Cuba totaled $59,613,978, up 10.58% ($5,701,986) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $57,386,888, up 51.66% ($19,546,633) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $2,227,090, down 86.14% ($13,844,647) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $55,159,798, a 153.39% increase ($33,391,280) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Cuba was Russia’s 94th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 95th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0408% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0442% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Cuba was Russia’s 82nd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 91st in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0672% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0526% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Cuba was Russia’s 118th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 87th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0037% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0322% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Cuba

The major share of Russian exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 42.72% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (1.16% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 38.32% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (72.53% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 10.78% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (14.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.12% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (3.84% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.10% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (3.16% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.32% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (2.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $22,642,195;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $4,344,195;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $3,402,936;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $3,169,605;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $1,437,040;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $1,198,583;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $487,819;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $338,579;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $173,850.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $16,526,616;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,190,574;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $839,418;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $188,454.

The major share of Russian imports from Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 73.76% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (80.32% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 26.22% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (0.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (19.65% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).
