Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Iran was $429,751,103, down 38.90% ($273,585,035) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $389,146,411, down 42.16% ($283,623,432) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $40,604,692, up 32.84% ($10,038,397) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $348,541,719, a 45.73% decrease ($293,661,829) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Iran was Russia’s 49th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 33rd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2940% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.5769% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Iran was Russia’s 40th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 26th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.4559% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.9351% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Iran was Russia’s 73rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 78th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0668% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0612% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 41.57% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (10.26% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 27.05% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (15.59% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 17.69% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (44.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 9.14% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (6.44% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.24% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (1.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $63,890,725;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $32,188,505;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $4,696,543;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $3,488,765;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $3,050,065;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1,999,495;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $1,916,280;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $11,906,478;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $5,686,347;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $5,190,027;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $2,430,880;
