Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with North Korea was $13,122,769, down 19.59% ($3,196,596) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $11,684,019, down 24.66% ($3,825,151) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $1,438,750, up 77.58% ($628,555) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $10,245,269, a 30.30% decrease ($4,453,706) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

North Korea was Russia’s 129th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 120th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0090% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0134% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 115th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 107th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0137% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0216% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

North Korea was Russia’s 125th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 132nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0024% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0016% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 82.18% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (94.75% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 11.27% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (0.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.20% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (2.62% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.58% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (1.81% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $258,614;

  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $179,621;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $152,972;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $118,940;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $71,240;

  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $269,369;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $173,152;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $101,907;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $40,862.
