Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $57,610,975, up 56.14% ($20,715,043) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $56,807,205, up 59.63% ($21,219,715) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $803,770, down 38.57% ($504,672) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $56,003,435, a 63.38% increase ($21,724,387) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Syria was Russia’s 95th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 105th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0394% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0303% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 83rd largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 92nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0666% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0495% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 132nd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 124th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0013% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0026% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 40.14% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (20.84% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 14.42% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (8.57% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.59% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (6.56% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.71% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (10.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.98% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.01% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $8,382,594;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $6,861,075;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $4,042,037;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $3,869,411;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $1,215,840;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,158,616;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - an increase of $544,389;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $328,050.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $1,619,661;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $1,104,974;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $463,904;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $407,524;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $359,998;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $315,576.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 94.86% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (97.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.59% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.52% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - an increase of $31,879;
