Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $6,034,043,352, up 9.78% ($537,586,345) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $2,870,459,059, up 16.89% ($414,710,897) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $3,163,584,293, up 4.04% ($122,875,448) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade deficit with the US in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $293,125,234, a 49.89% decrease ($291,835,449) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

The US was Russia’s 5th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 4.1276% of Russia’s total trade (down from 4.5081% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The US was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.3628% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.4134% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 5.2009% of Russia’s total imports (down from 6.0841% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 35.68% of Russia’s total exports to the US (32.89% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 35.27% of Russia’s total exports to the US (41.45% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.76% of Russia’s total exports to the US (13.42% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 5.90% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.72% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.71% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.18% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.98% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $56,861,772;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $31,599,798;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $25,863,928;
  • Other base metals; cermets; articles thereof (HS code 81) - an increase of $15,036,691;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
