Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $32,134,686, down 33.84% ($16,435,110) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 were $30,580,677, down 35.89% ($17,117,193) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $1,554,009, up 78.23% ($682,083) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $29,026,668, a 38.01% decrease ($17,799,276) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 111th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 100th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0192% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0356% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 94th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 83rd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0297% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0569% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 123rd largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 127th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0024% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0017% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 31.39% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (35.18% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 27.30% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (18.01% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 16.87% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (23.22% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.79% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (18.15% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.67% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.30% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.71% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.31% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $543,302;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $466,369;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $439,915;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $192,002;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $178,330.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $6,017,166;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $5,916,421;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $4,995,697;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $1,550,155;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $267,075;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $220,677;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $112,860.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 47.35% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (98.57% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 18.06% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.02% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.01% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (1.32% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $25,070;
