Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $44,140,390, up 28.30% ($9,736,853) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $43,521,718, up 29.36% ($9,879,089) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 were $618,672, down 18.69% ($142,236) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $42,903,046, a 30.48% increase ($10,021,325) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Syria was Russia’s 105th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 110th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0264% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0252% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 91st largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 94th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0423% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0401% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Syria was Russia’s 135th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 130th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0010% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0015% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 37.56% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (19.69% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 36.02% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (36.58% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 12.45% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.91% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.45% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.22% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.67% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (3.56% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $5,839,408;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $4,204,448;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $3,544,720;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $2,072,347;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $1,986,988;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $335,697;
  • Other base metals; cermets; articles thereof (HS code 81) - an increase of $155,002;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $147,775.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $1,023,569;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $390,858;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $251,993;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $220,758.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 89.29% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (89.80% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.32% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (2.38% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.69% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (4.88% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.59% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (2.02% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
