Russia’s Trade with Cuba

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Cuba was $75,821,772, down 24.45% ($24,535,681) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $73,575,286, down 21.91% ($20,637,548) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $2,246,486, down 63.44% ($3,898,133) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $71,328,800, a 19.01% decrease ($16,739,415) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Cuba was Russia’s 87th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 78th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0481% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0781% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Cuba was Russia’s 76th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 68th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0714% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1131% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Cuba was Russia’s 121st largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 100th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0041% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0136% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Cuba

The major share of Russian exports to Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 47.88% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (74.33% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 31.68% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (18.80% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 13.35% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (0.95% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.60% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (0.40% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.34% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (1.66% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.28% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (0.27% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $5,391,141;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $5,185,231;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $5,033,306;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $3,834,086;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $3,551,394;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - an increase of $1,587,601;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $1,144,724;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $712,462;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $497,904;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $326,986;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $302,682.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $39,960,004;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $5,003,335;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $393,039;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $342,850.

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.59% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (24.83% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.34% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (5.79% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (69.36% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Cuba in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
