Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $5,170,191,826, up 4.16% ($206,523,251) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $2,631,330,515, up 7.96% ($193,919,119) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $2,538,861,311, up 0.50% ($12,604,132) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a deficit of $88,845,783 in the 1st quarter of 2017, to a surplus of $92,469,204 in the 1st quarter of 2018.

The US was Russia’s 7th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 6th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.2799% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.8612% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The US was Russia’s 11th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 10th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.5541% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.9248% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The US was Russia’s 4th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 3rd in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 4.6491% of Russia’s total imports (down from 5.5871% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 45.40% of Russia’s total exports to the US (35.87% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 22.76% of Russia’s total exports to the US (34.20% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 18.52% of Russia’s total exports to the US (12.21% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 5.52% of Russia’s total exports to the US (8.61% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.70% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.79% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.25% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.80% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $17,257,101;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
