Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $20,210,538, down 42.22% ($14,769,497) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $19,282,675, down 43.97% ($15,130,899) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $927,863, up 63.80% ($361,402) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 was $18,354,812, a 45.77% decrease ($15,492,301) over the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 124th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 107th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0117% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0239% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 107th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 92nd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0172% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0403% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 128th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (up from 134th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0015% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0009% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 27.17% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (22.85% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 20.02% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (45.65% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.95% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.48% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (4.56% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $170,263;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $140,143;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $81,428.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $11,849,972;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $2,762,959;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $743,531;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $536,504;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $370,078;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $217,952;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $202,171;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $177,981;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $168,977;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $161,955.

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.37% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (77.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.04% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (15.74% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
