Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $6,286,799,234, up 4.19% ($252,755,882) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 totaled $3,446,041,971, up 20.05% ($575,582,912) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 were $2,840,757,263, down 10.20% ($322,827,030) from the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a deficit of $293,125,234 in the 3rd quarter of 2017, to a surplus of $605,284,708 in the 3rd quarter of 2018.

The US was Russia’s 7th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 5th in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.6536% of Russia’s total trade (down from 4.1276% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The US was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 3.0714% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.3628% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The US was Russia’s 4th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (down from 3rd in the 3rd quarter of 2017), accounting for 4.7445% of Russia’s total imports (down from 5.2009% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 47.40% of Russia’s total exports to the US (35.27% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 18.65% of Russia’s total exports to the US (35.68% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.79% of Russia’s total exports to the US (14.76% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 8.76% of Russia’s total exports to the US (5.90% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.35% of Russia’s total exports to the US (2.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.75% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.98% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $28,003,027;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $27,739,233;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $25,043,736;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $403,331,225;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $11,206,991.

Russia’s Imports from the US

The major share of Russian imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 42.37% of Russia’s total imports from the US (42.68% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 18.62% of Russia’s total imports from the US (18.56% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.79% of Russia’s total imports from the US (3.24% in the 3rd quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.45% of Russia’s total imports from the US (3.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the 3rd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
