Russia’s Trade with Costa Rica

In the 4th quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Costa Rica was $46,380,775, down 14.31% ($7,747,578) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 totaled $7,295,461, up 3.40% ($239,779) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $39,085,314, down 16.97% ($7,987,357) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade deficit with Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 was $31,789,853, a 20.56% decrease ($8,227,136) over the 4th quarter of 2017.

Costa Rica was Russia’s 109th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 99th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0248% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0324% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 131st largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 122nd in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0059% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0069% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 80th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 73rd in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0627% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0732% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Costa Rica

The major share of Russian exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 66.26% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (65.82% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 33.25% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (9.27% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.17% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (4.90% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.00% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (3.22% in the 4th quarter of 2017).
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.00% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (15.45% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $176,718;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $117,762;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $34,950;
  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - an increase of $23,360.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $1,089,996;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $333,179;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $137,856;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $98,152;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $92,332;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $83,982;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $29,431.

Russia’s Imports from Costa Rica

The major share of Russian imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 79.61% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (67.74% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 17.83% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (30.87% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $454,916;
  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - an increase of $350,741;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $119,092.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $7,983,868;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $399,562;
  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $213,697;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $195,260;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $124,728.
