Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $205,285,552, up 15.17% ($27,032,885) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $37,658,783, up 23.24% ($7,102,172) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $167,626,769, up 13.49% ($19,930,713) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $129,967,986, a 10.95% increase ($12,828,541) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Australia was Russia’s 71st largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 77th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1238% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1036% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Australia was Russia’s 94th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 100th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0364% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0272% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Australia was Russia’s 46th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 48th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.2680% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.2467% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 42.80% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (29.44% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 29.89% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (39.78% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 9.00% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (11.77% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 8.46% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (7.50% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.96% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (4.97% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $1,674,836;
  • Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal; parts thereof of base metal (HS code 82) - an increase of $461,988;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $158,651;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $113,878.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $890,994;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $771,030;

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $294,421;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $283,664;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $208,237;
