Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $467,269,572, up 48.33% ($152,241,365) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $372,185,811, up 50.53% ($124,942,982) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $95,083,761, up 40.27% ($27,298,383) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $277,102,050, a 54.41% increase ($97,644,599) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Iran was Russia’s 53rd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 60th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.2817% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1831% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Iran was Russia’s 45th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 51st in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3602% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.2204% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Iran was Russia’s 59th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 63rd in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1520% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1132% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 76.33% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (73.12% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 9.95% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.35% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 8.17% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (16.41% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.28% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (2.35% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.17% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (0.32% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $21,398,761;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $19,107,753;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $12,373,479;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $4,292,879;
  • Man-made filaments (HS code 54) - an increase of $2,204,188;
  • Wadding, felt and nonwovens; special yarns, twine, cordage, ropes and cables and articles thereof (HS code 56) - an increase of $1,354,621;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $1,226,153.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $4,831,941;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $4,592,143;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $2,005,067;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,384,561;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - a decrease of $1,171,676.
