Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Japan was $5,515,633,187, down 7.07% ($419,370,339) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $3,116,780,158, down 16.05% ($596,077,382) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $2,398,853,029, up 7.95% ($176,707,043) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $717,927,129, a 51.84% decrease ($772,784,425) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.3253% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.4492% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Japan was Russia’s 12th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.0165% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.3093% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Japan was Russia’s 6th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.8352% of Russia’s total imports (up from 3.7113% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 78.76% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (79.03% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 6.57% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.02% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.06% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (7.18% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.76% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.96% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.15% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.36% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $14,751,342;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $12,073,659.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $479,427,894;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $79,366,191;

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.18% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (3.93% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
