Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with South Africa totaled $363,467,032, up 6.04% ($20,711,289) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $131,839,454, up 19.89% ($21,867,926) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $231,627,578, down 0.50% ($1,156,637) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $99,788,124, a 18.75% decrease ($23,024,563) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

South Africa was Russia’s 58th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.2191% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1992% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 69th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 76th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1276% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0980% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 43rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 41st in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3703% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3888% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 61.14% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (71.58% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 20.19% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (5.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.48% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (1.93% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.61% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (15.40% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.70% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (3.88% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $9,369,911;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $1,948,268;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $501,683;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $449,769.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $5,058,106;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $4,620,994;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $708,934.
