Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $183,231,237, down 9.78% ($19,866,700) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $37,619,842, down 6.37% ($2,558,339) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $145,611,395, down 10.62% ($17,308,361) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2020 was $107,991,553, a 12.02% decrease ($14,750,022) over the 1st quarter of 2019.

South Africa was Russia’s 74th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 71st in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1289% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1290% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 87th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 88th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0423% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0385% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 49th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 45th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2739% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3071% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 22.64% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (28.51% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 19.27% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (20.81% in the 1st quarter of 2019);

  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $176,950;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $170,159;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $156,337;
