Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $6,614,944,294, up 10.67% ($637,518,325) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $3,317,542,516, up 23.52% ($631,602,102) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $3,297,401,778, up 0.18% ($5,916,223) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a deficit of $605,545,141 in the 1st quarter of 2019, to a surplus of $20,140,738 in the 1st quarter of 2020.

The US was Russia’s 4th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 7th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 4.6538% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.7970% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 8th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 10th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 3.7284% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.5732% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 6.2030% of Russia’s total imports (down from 6.2053% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 57.05% of Russia’s total exports to the US (44.88% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 18.97% of Russia’s total exports to the US (10.77% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 10.48% of Russia’s total exports to the US (21.88% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.35% of Russia’s total exports to the US (14.88% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.93% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.35% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.52% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.79% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $702,525,638;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $340,075,330;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $35,030,410.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $173,360,849;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $139,612,887;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $59,113,387;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $42,268,276;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $15,114,977;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $12,365,460.

The major share of Russian imports from the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 33.30% of Russia’s total imports from the US (33.87% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.84% of Russia’s total imports from the US (14.44% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.93% of Russia’s total imports from the US (3.38% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.32% of Russia’s total imports from the US (3.03% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from the US in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
