Russia’s Trade with Canada

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Canada was $258,432,630, down 42.58% ($191,649,873) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Canada in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $63,146,270, down 73.23% ($172,775,961) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Canada in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $195,286,360, down 8.81% ($18,873,912) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Canada went from a surplus of $21,761,959 in the 2nd quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $132,140,090 in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Canada was Russia’s 64th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 51st in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2118% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2811% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Canada was Russia’s 75th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (down from 55th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0903% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.2341% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Canada was Russia’s 44th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.3749% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.3610% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Canada

The major share of Russian exports to Canada in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 47.77% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (19.05% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 14.94% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (69.02% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.23% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.90% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 7.86% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.89% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.68% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (2.12% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,426,289;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $346,861;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $342,735;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - an increase of $265,850.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Canada in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 21.02% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (27.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 11.78% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (11.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.39% of Russia’s total imports from Canada (7.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
