Russia’s Trade with Kenya

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Kenya totaled $83,894,840, up 52.38% ($28,837,890) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $58,130,091, up 119.09% ($31,597,760) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were $25,764,749, down 9.68% ($2,759,870) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Kenya went from a deficit of $1,992,288 in the 2nd quarter of 2019, to a surplus of $32,365,342 in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Kenya was Russia’s 83rd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 93rd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0688% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0344% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Kenya was Russia’s 78th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 96th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0831% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0263% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Kenya was Russia’s 81st largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 83rd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0495% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0481% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Kenya

The major share of Russian exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 43.41% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (16.44% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 37.07% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (63.31% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 10.24% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (11.14% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.16% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (7.10% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.16% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (0.14% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $20,361,802;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $4,725,407;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $2,494,658;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $2,381,113;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $512,668;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $499,279;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $496,388.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

Russia’s Imports from Kenya

The major share of Russian imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.61% of Russia’s total imports from Kenya (99.57% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $1,428,837;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $951,584;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $234,915.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $3,993,464;
  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - a decrease of $746,671;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $517,602;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $91,597;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted (HS code 62) - a decrease of $80,114.
