Russia’s Trade with Nigeria

In the 2nd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Nigeria totaled $107,968,085, up 65.57% ($42,758,886) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $95,597,359, up 55.32% ($34,048,760) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 totaled $12,370,726, up 237.94% ($8,710,126) from the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 was $83,226,633, a 43.77% increase ($25,338,634) over the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Nigeria was Russia’s 75th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 91st in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0885% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0407% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Nigeria was Russia’s 66th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 82nd in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1367% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0611% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Nigeria was Russia’s 92nd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (up from 116th in the 2nd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0237% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0062% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Nigeria

The major share of Russian exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 40.02% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (0.46% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 25.15% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (9.10% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 22.41% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (11.45% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 10.95% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (21.72% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.03% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (1.37% in the 2nd quarter of 2019);

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $18,635,882;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $14,415,386;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $859,363;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $409,652;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $314,925;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $302,757.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $3,311,841;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $2,470,493;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $1,761,918;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $646,436;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $518,893.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (4.24% in the 2nd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2020 over the 2nd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
