Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 3rd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Japan was $3,834,704,813, down 30.48% ($1,680,928,374) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $2,355,307,950, down 24.43% ($761,472,208) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $1,479,396,863, down 38.33% ($919,456,166) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was $875,911,087, a 22.01% increase ($157,983,958) over the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Japan was Russia’s 11th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 2.8078% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.3253% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Japan was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 12th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 2.9945% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.0165% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (down from 6th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 2.5543% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.8352% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 72.29% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (78.76% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 10.14% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (6.57% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.71% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (6.06% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.22% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.76% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.13% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (3.15% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
