Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 3rd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $332,789,544, down 8.44% ($30,677,488) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $113,708,689, down 13.75% ($18,130,765) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $219,080,855, down 5.42% ($12,546,723) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was $105,372,166, a 5.60% increase ($5,584,042) over the 3rd quarter of 2019.

South Africa was Russia’s 55th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 58th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.2437% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.2191% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 65th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 69th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1446% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.1276% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

South Africa was Russia’s 41st largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 43rd in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.3783% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.3703% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 63.23% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (61.14% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 22.18% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (20.19% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.39% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (8.48% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.53% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (5.61% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.97% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (2.70% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.32% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (1.78% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $2,041,003;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $1,160,213;
  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - an increase of $341,767.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $8,748,540;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $5,213,553;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $3,181,282;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $3,031,711;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $425,444;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $383,336.
