Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 3rd quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with the US was $5,314,455,588, down 14.59% ($907,938,983) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $2,511,300,733, down 21.81% ($700,619,761) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2020 were $2,803,154,855, down 6.89% ($207,319,222) from the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a surplus of $201,446,417 in the 3rd quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $291,854,122 in the 3rd quarter of 2020.

The US was Russia’s 6th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 7th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 3.8913% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.7513% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 9th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (up from 11th in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 3.1929% of Russia’s total exports (up from 3.1086% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

The US was Russia’s 4th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2019), accounting for 4.8398% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.8130% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2020 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 49.73% of Russia’s total exports to the US (49.51% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 15.28% of Russia’s total exports to the US (15.06% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.87% of Russia’s total exports to the US (13.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.09% of Russia’s total exports to the US (14.88% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.68% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.94% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.70% in the 3rd quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.63% of Russia’s total exports to the US (0.68% in the 3rd quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $11,772,806;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $7,795,864.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2020 over the 3rd quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
